BRAZIL

One of my favorite Brazilian landscapes - a Rupestrian grassland on a quartzite. Central Minas Gerais

Potholes! Northern Minas Gerais.
Typical feature from waterfalls. Formed due to water turbulence with sediments that carves the bedrock and leaves a smoothed walls behind.

Paleosol (white) - Sandstone (red) sequence. Late Cretaceous. Western Mineas Gerais.
The white color on the paleosols is due to the carbonate accumulation. It indicates a dry paleoclimate in the region during the Late Cretaceous.

Another exposure of the Cretaceous paleosol-sandstone sequence.

Just having fun! A cretaceous paleosol outcrop. Western Minas Gerais
Carbonate-rich paleosols intercalated with reddish sandstones. Marilia Fm - Bauru Basin.

Paleosol-sandstone outcrop exposed on a road cut. Western Minas Gerais

A rhizolith taken from a paleosol
This is a former root that was calcified. The processes involved cementation of soil material around the living roots; the filling of voids after the death of the roots, and the calcification of root tissues. Another great evidence for a paleosol formation in a semi-arid paleoclimate

Root marks filled with fine sand
The presence of paleo root channels is an awesome evidence of paleosol developement

Hey, a penguin in Brazil?
These Magellanic penguins are not uncommon on the southeast coast of Brazil during the winter months.
